some things

I’m sitting on the bedroom floor.
Next to Sophie her bed.
The girl who lives in superlatives feels miserable. Extremely miserable.

Sophie is sick. We’ve had more sickness the last month or two.
Something with cold and new-for-us germs I guess.

Boaz and Zarah went on a playdate this afternoon. Both to a friend from their own class.
Boaz to the house of one of the girls. Zarah to the house of a boy.
Some things didn’t change.

Before they left for school, Boaz and Zarah went up to Sophie’s room.
To check on her. To tell her they’ll miss her. To love on her.
Some things don’t change.

We are in week three of school now.
I learned a little of this new dance. The steps in the morning to get them to school in time. The pace in the afternoon, circling around other parents or moving with them in different rhythms to arrange playdates, the sway of birthday party customs. The unwritten rules of a somewhat foreign culture are unfolding for me.

Now we have the basics down -like car, house, bikes, school, grocery stores-, we stepped into new territory. That of the start of construction. Paving the ground for a solid foundation. For the building of our lives here. Our social network. Our crowd. The people who will influence us. And those who we have the privilege of sharing our lives with.

I was in the yard with Boaz. It was a nice, ‘summery’ winter day.
Boaz was working on his first real remodeling project.
On the fence hangs a thermometer. It pointed to 54F. While I told Boaz in Austin we would have thought it was a cold day, I realized I didn’t believe it myself anymore. There I was, standing in my sweater, in the sun. It was one of the best days we’ve had here. A few weeks ago I was amazed that they call it spring with 53F, now I found myself enjoying every bit of this warm and beautiful day…
Some things do change.
(Although I do miss wearing my shorts and skirts without having to wear a legging.)

But it wasn’t the very best ‘summery’ winter day we have had so far. Just last week, we went to the beach. They said it was an almost all time high for that date with 63F in some places in the country.
Boaz spend a long time building a waterway with a sandcastle. Sophie enjoyed the sand, but choose to stay away from the water. And Zarah? What better way to spend my day than to see her come alive. Light-hearted, sparkling. Fully alive. Put her outside, in the sun and wind. With water and sand. In a place were the sky is the limit. And you’ll see her, in the most beautiful way. (She doesn’t even care anymore that she is wearing pants and not a skirt or dress!)
Some things don’t change.

Boaz and I biked to the town center. He on his bike. I on mine. For every person who passed by it must have been the most normal sight. So ordinary. A boy and his mom. Biking to the store.
The moment Boaz asked: “Mom, do you know someone in America who bikes to places. Like to the store or school…” I realized, with a glimpse of joy, how special this time was. Nothing ordinary. A boy and his mom. Biking to the store. Realizing our lives would never be the same.
Some things do change.

Next to me a little, sick girl finds some of her spirited, joyful self again. She looks at me with a smile on her face. She remembers the candy at the coffee table and asks: “Mom, can I have some chocolate…”
Some things never change!

ps. Peter got a new American Visa in his passport, he is welcome again in the country our kids are born. Free to come over to his office (and visit some of you :)).
